Weekly Devotional 6-30-14 God the Son Became The Son of God

Around 3 B.C. the second person of the Godhead, God the Son, became the Son of God. That is, God the Son wrapped Himself in human flesh. The gospel writers, Matthew and Luke inform us that this was accomplished by the way of all flesh since Adam; yet, different than all other flesh, in that it was by the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15) and not the seed of a man. Matthew and Luke explain that Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and she was with child. No one can explain this further, it was super natural. John the Apostle wrote, “1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God… 14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-2…14 NKJV).

How can we possibly fully appreciate this? God the Creator of all there is, holy and righteous without measure, became a created being, subjecting Himself to all that afflicts the creature (man). He became man so that He could identify with man, be their high priest (their representative) and accomplish what man could-not himself accomplish: the satisfying of God’s judgment against sin. From the record, we know that sin became a reality when man’s federal head (Adam) tested the waters of disobedience; wanting to become like God, to know good and evil (Genesis 3:1-6). Adam certainly didn’t know all that would issue from his disobedience, but none-the-less the door had been opened to self-will, selfish desire and personal glorification (Genesis 3:8). As a result of his disobedience, Adam was no longer comfortable in the presence of God. He became alienated toward God, experiencing guilt, shame and rebellion (Genesis 3:10). The record tells us that Adam blamed God for his disobedience. When confronted by God for what Adam had done he said, “The woman you gave me led me into disobedience and I followed her instead of you” (Genesis 3:12). Something terrible had happened in the life of Adam. He no longer worshipped God as he had, he became spiritually separated from (had spiritually died toward) God, as God said he would (Genesis 2:17).
From Paul’s letter to the Romans we learn that Adam’s disobedience (sin) has fallen to all of his descendants (to all persons). From chapter 5 of that letter we read, “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sin” (vs.12). Further, that God’s condemnation (judgment) has come upon all persons, excluding none (vv. 16 & 18). (Please read Romans 5:12-21).

Glory be to God that He made provision for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21). He has made provision for man to be forgiven of his sin. God’s provision to Adam and Eve was a blood sacrifice (demonstrated by the provided skins), and His provision to Adam’s offspring was (is) also a blood sacrifice, the blood sacrifice of the Son of God. We read from Romans 5: 8-11, “8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

God, through the writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that it was (is) not possible that the blood of bulls and goats (animals) could take away sin. Thus, the sacrifice of the animals to obtain skins to cover the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21) looked pass that sacrifice to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The writer put it this way, “4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. 5Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: ‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. 6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure.’ 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come In the volume of the book it is written of Me—To do Your will, O God.’ 8Previously saying, ‘Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them’ Oh God.’ He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 1And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 14For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:4-14 NKJV).

How thankful the writer of this letter was; and how thankful we should be that God the Son became the Son of God and sacrificed Himself for man that man might be redeemed. Might be redeemed qualifies that even though Jesus’ blood has been shed for man it must be applied. This application takes place when God calls a person to Himself. The Holy Spirit regenerates the said person to newness of spiritual life and he or she repents of their sin and commits to serving God.

If you (if we) are truly thankful that God the Son became the Son of God, your life (our lives) will be a demonstration of that thankfulness.
