Weekly Devotional 5-4-15 Spiritual Hunger or Lack Thereof

A living organism in the physical realm needs nourishment and this is also true in the spiritual realm. If there is spiritual life, there is a need of spiritual nourishment. In both realms, physical or spiritual, need creates hunger. As long as there is life a hunger for nourishment exists. In the physical realm if the need of nourishment no longer exists it is because there is no longer life. This is also true in the spiritual realm. If life exists there will be a need for spiritual nourishment. Actually, this truth is a great barometer for whether or not a person has spiritual life. If there is no hunger, spiritual life does not exist, nor ever has. What a tragedy.

There are many who believe they have spiritual life, but such belief is disproved by their lack of spiritual interest, spiritual hunger. A person who is spiritually alive will hunger for greater knowledge about Jesus Christ, his Redeemer. He or she will hunger for a closer fellowship with Him and he or she will hunger for a closer relationship with other believers. These things cannot be otherwise.

It is questionable if a person truly has spiritual life if he or she must be coaxed into a personal research of Scripture. This also true if one must be coaxed into having meaningful fellowship with other Christians, such things are consistent with a spiritual life. Hopefully, you are not one who must be coaxed into these things. Hopefully they are the hunger of your heart.

Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26 NKJV).

A person who is truly alive spiritually will be hungry for the things of God. He or she will desire a deeper understanding of Him, will desire fellowship with Him and other believers, and will want passionately to be led by Him. This should be the passion, yea, the hunger of your life. If it is not, sincerely ask God for such a hunger and you will be amazed what will follow. He wants to have a relationship with you and fellowship with you. Neither will be denied.
