Weekly Devotional 4-16-18 Cave Dwellers or Not

For as long as I can remember, the claim has been advanced that man’s ancestors lived in caves; that they did not live in more sophisticated structures until long into their future. But is this true? Is this verifiable? In truth, there have been found various artifacts that give evidence that man’s ancestors had at least been in caves, but is that ample evidence that those ancestors lived for any duration of time in said caves? No. There is just no way of proving such an assertion.

The Bible, on the other hand, testifies that Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve, living in the land of Nod (which was east of Eden), built a city and named it Enoch after his first-born son (See Genesis 4:16-17). Many of Cain’s descendants were Nomadic and being Nomadic they would have spent much time in tents, and possibly short periods of time in caves as they moved from area to area leaving testimony of their presence. However, this does not suggest the caves were intended as permanent dwellings.

Approximately 1,200 to 1,400 years after the flood in which God destroyed all of mankind except the family of Noah, man had multiplied greatly. An ungodly leader by the name of Nimrod, thought to keep mankind from spreading across the face of the earth and built a city that became known as Babel (See Genesis 11). But, God confused their tongues (their language) and they separated into different societies, societies numbering into the thousands which necessitated more cities. A few years after this great migration, we read of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 14).

Although not mentioned in the Biblical narrative up to this point, other cities had also been built. Cities with walls around them that protected them from invaders. All of this to say, no matter what some may unsubstantially claim, it is according to the Biblical record that many cities had been built in man’s early history.

Why make such claims, that early man lived in caves? Is it not, in most cases that such claimers want to deny the record of the Bible and more importantly, the existence of God?

The Bible unashamedly says “1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), and that He created man in His own image endowing him with authority and a creative mind fashioned after His own. Consider Genesis 1:26-28. “26Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Adam and Eve were created with perception, understanding, creativity, and judgment.

It is not reasonable therefore, that after all of this evidence, anyone should hold that early man dwelt in caves other than for short periods of time.
