5-21-18 Weekly Devotional; What Can I do at this Age
Many senior Christians with whom I have contact have asked, “What can I do at this age, I have so many limitations?” Certainly, life has changed for them and all of us who have reached the senior status. Being 75 years old myself I can identify somewhat with this thinking. One thing we should consider, however, is that when the Lord called us out of spiritual darkness into the light of truth (called us to be His children), He called us to a lifetime of service. As long as we draw breath we are in His service. We are to continue being a light unto the world even though our lives have somewhat changed.
Thinking about this, I was led to Paul’s letter to Titus. He instructed Titus to instruct the older men of the church he pastored to be sober, to be reverent, to be temperate, to be sound in the faith, to demonstrate love (charity) and to exude patience (See Titus 2:2). We older men may not be able to climb the hills that we once climbed, but we can be an example in the things mentioned to others, especially younger men.
As to older women, Titus was to instruct them to be “3reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things- 4that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed” (Titus 2-5 NKJV).
Our senior women may not be as active as they once were in the church, but they can be examples to the younger women of their circles, and in some of the things Paul noted.
The things mentioned to both senior men and senior women should have been our practices from the time that God called us. Because of the Holy Spirit’s maturing us, these things should now be perfected in our lives. What a privilege is ours and the examples we can be to others have eternal consequences.
