Weekly Devotional 12-17-18 The Advent of the Son of God

Soon it will be the time that most of the world will observe the birth of Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, the Son of God. We Christians will celebrate His birth. Others will take it in stride as being just another birth. Still others will deny it altogether, believing it to be a myth. To the latter we reply, His life was attested to by such Jewish historians as Flavius Josephus, Plinius Secundus, Cornelius Tacitus and many others. These were people who were more or less hostile to Christianity, and definitely were not followers of Christ. Persons who clearly were not out to propagate favorable belief in Him, yet they spoke of Him.

To those who consider the birth of Jesus as just being another birth, consider the hostility toward Him. His birth and his life certainly are not irrelevant. Wars have been fought in His name and people have given their lives for Him. For Christians, Jesus birth is necessary to our faith. He was the son of Mary, but He was also the Son of God. A vast difference from the birth of all other human beings. All humans are the offspring of two human persons, but Jesus was the offspring of Mary by the influence (the overshadowing) of God the Holy Spirit. We read from the gospel of Luke, “26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!’ 29But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son and shall call His name Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.’ 34Then Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I do not know a man?’ 35And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God’”(Luke 1:16-35).

The Apostle John by inspiration of the same the Holy Spirit wrote, “1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God…..14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-2; 14).

God the Son, the second person of the holy trinity, became the son of God. What a wonder! What a miracle!
