Weekly Devotional 12-24-18 Earth’s Righteous King

Webster’s Ninth Collegiate Dictionary defines a king as “a monarch of a major territorial unit-one whose position is hereditary and rules for life”. By this definition there have been men who have risen to the position of kingship. But, has there ever been a righteous king? No, that has been and is an impossibility. There have been kings who seemingly ruled righteously seeking the best for their subjects, some have even given their lives for their subjects but, were they without flaw? No. Every human being is born with a sin nature having self at its center, even those who have risen to kinghood. Their sin nature has been seminally passed to them by their fathers. It cannot be avoided. Scripture tells us that all have sinned, that there is none righteous (Romans 3:10).

The only way to avoid having a nature that was seminally passed from father to son would be to have a father that was not human and that was/is the uniqueness of Jesus Christ, earth’s future “righteous” king. Turning to the gospel of Luke we read that an angel had been dispatched by God to tell the priest Zacarias that his wife Elizabeth would conceive and bear him a son. And six months later the angel Gabriel was sent to a virgin named Mary to inform her that she would be with child also.

We join the telling of this event at verse 26 of Luke he chapter 2 and read: “26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”

So yes, some day, perhaps soon, earth will have a king. He truly will be righteous for it will be God Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:3).

Even so King Jesus, establish your kingdom!
