Another Step to Having the Peace of God

As stated earlier in this series of devotionals, God has made it possible for us to be at peace with Him and have the peace of God. He gave His only begotten Son for that purpose. Jesus reconciled us to God. However, for us to experience the peace of God, we must be committed believers. It is one thing for a believer to have Jesus as his Savior, but it is quite another to have Him as his or her Lord. For Him to be the Lord of our lives we must be surrendered to his leadership. There cannot be two persons directing us. Either He directs our path, or we direct our path. When we allow Him to direct our path, we find ourselves in harmony with the will of God. But, if we displace Him from that authority, taking that authority to ourselves, we often-times find ourselves at odds with God’s will. Even though we have been given a new nature we still have the old nature and it says to us, “Satisfy the desires of your flesh, your carnality.” That attitude robs us of the peace of God.

Paul, our example from last week (1-21-2019), in his encour-agement to the Colossians wrote, “5Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. 8But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. 12Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; 13bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:15-17).

Surely, we can see Paul’s intention. He was encouraging the Colossians to allow Jesus to rule in their lives. They were to strive against their old nature and live according to the witness of their new natures. If they did so, they would experience the peace of God. And so it will be with us.
