Weekly Devotional 1-19-15 Study Too Show Thyself Approved

2nd Timothy 2:15 KJV, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

In the text in which this verse is found, Paul had been instructing Timothy about what he should commit to faithful men. These would then be able to teach others also, in essence the gospel. As Paul went on in those instructions he commanded Timothy to “to be diligent, to present himself approved of God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” He in turn, was to command other faithful men with the same charge. He and they were to be well prepared to stand against those who would preach some other gospel.

Researching the word “study” in this verse, we find that it is translated from the Greek word “sp?udaz? (Strong’s number 4704, used several times in the New Testament), having the sense of diligent urgency, which denotes extreme importance. From this we can conclude that God means what He says, and says what He means. His word must stand as it is. It cannot be changed. Nothing can be added to it or deleted from it. Being faithful to those principles is the only way Timothy and his charges (vs.2) could be found approved of by God.

Is not this charge applicable to the teacher/facilitator of our day? Should they or we not study diligently in order to know God’s Word and be fully prepared to withstand those who either by error, or willfully, subvert God’s Word?

Certainly the teacher/facilitator of our day should want to be found faithful, to be approved unto God and without shame. The teacher/felicitator and we must be willing to allow God’s Spirit to illuminate His truth within our minds. God has provided them and us with the necessary tools to rightly divide and understand His word, and with the Holy Spirit who’s commission was and is to lead the believer into truth (John 16:13). Beside these tools, God has over the years raised up gifted men who have been diligent and faithful in their study who can aid the teacher/facilitator and us in our understanding.

May they, and each of us who purport to be a teacher or felicitator, be found faithful, and approved unto God, workmen that do not need to be ashamed.
