Weekly Devotional 2-25-18 Was Jesus Married?

I am not sure when it began, but there are persons today that claim Jesus was married. And, I am not sure on what they base their claim. Certainly, it is not the Bible. The Bible, in fact, teaches just the opposite; for instance, it teaches that Jesus was God, preventing such a union.

Consider that Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, before He took on human flesh was God the Son. In support of this we read from the gospel of John that, 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God…. 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-2…14). And from the book of Hebrews we read: “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me” (Hebrews 10:5).

The writer of Hebrews of course was talking about Jesus, for he began his letter with these words; “1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high”(Hebrews 1:1-3).

These passages establish that before Mary conceived in her womb by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, God the Son existed; because He was God. Now we ask this question, Did Jesus stop being God when He took on human flesh? No. Even though He laid aside some aspects of Deity He was God. Having established this truth, we turn to the book of Jude and read. “6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (Jude 1:6).

God had set boundaries between spirit beings (angels) and man. These angels violated those boundaries when they cohabitated with the daughters of men. We read of this in the book of Genesis. “1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them” (Genesis 6:1-7).
Fallen angels, those who had followed Satan in his rebellion against God (Isaiah 14:12-14; Ezekiel 28:12-14; Revelation 12:3-9), left their created state and possessed human males. Their union with the daughters of men resulted in man becoming so evil that God destroyed them all with the exception of eight persons, Noah and his family, and has reserved in chains said angels until the Day of Judgment.

If God’s judgment was such against these angels, would He as Jesus violate such a separation? Absolutely not. It would have been an act that violated His Holy being. (Remember, even though God the Son took on human flesh He still was God).

Therefore, in that Jesus was God in the flesh, why are their some who claim that Jesus was married? Why do they try to convince others of this untruth? Perhaps it is because of spiritual immaturity or perhaps it is because of their unwillingness to believe in the God of the Bible.

Jesus said of such persons (those who are unwilling to believe in the God of the Bible); “19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God” (John 3:19-21).

Hopefully, all who read this are not those of whom Jesus spoke.
