Part 6 – Reviled and Mocked – The Silent Lamb – The Disciples Scattered

Reviled and Mocked

Prophecy Proclaimed: “… a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see Me laugh Me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord that He would deliver Him: let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him (Psalm 22:6-8).”

Jesus was dying upon the cross. “And they that past by reviled Him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest in three days, save Thyself. If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross… If He be the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him (Matthew 27:39-42).”

Notice what they said: “Thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days…” They misapplied His word. “IF thou be the Son of God…” They mistrusted His deity. “Come down from the cross…” They minimized His death. Friend, underscore that word “if.” That’s the word that will send your soul to hell.

Cynicism and skepticism crucified Jesus. These sceptics said, “He says He’s the Son of God: He claims to be a miracle; then let Him come down from the cross. Let Him prove it. Do a miracle, do something, convince us. We want to see.” But Jesus did no miracle for that crowd.

They shouldn’t have said, “If thou be the Son of God comes down from the cross.” They should have gone and stood before that tomb and said, “If thou be the Son of God, come out.”

The Bible says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief (Hebrews 3:11). Pray for those you know in your life today who may have doubting minds.

Skepticism and cynicism crucified the Lord Jesus, but it was those sins for which He died.

Prophecy fulfilled: “And they that passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocked Him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He be the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him: for He said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with Him, cast the same in his teeth (Matthew 27:39-44.)”

The Silent Lamb

Prophecy Proclaimed: “He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth (Isaiah 53:7).”

I heard a man tell a story one time of another man who worked in a slaughterhouse where they slaughtered cattle. That man thought nothing of his job until one day the slaughter house began to process lambs. A lamb came through the chute, and he said, “It was my responsibility to cut the throat of that lamb.” He said, “I’d never done that before. I’d watched as the steers would wrestle and fight, but the little lamb just laid his neck back. I put in the knife, and the red blood came out on my hand. The little lamb looked up at me and then licked the blood from my hand.” He said, “I laid down my knife and resigned my job. I couldn’t do it. I could not take the life of a little lamb so meek, so mild.”

I think one of the grandest Scriptures in the Bible is found in John 10:18 where Jesus said, “No man taketh it (My life) from Me, but I lay it down of Myself” Jesus was sinless, and He did not have the sentence of death. There was no reason for Jesus to die, and He would not have died unless He laid down His life. When Jesus died, He did not die as a powerless victim nor did they kill Him against His will. Jesus did not die as a martyr, but He died willingly, vicariously… silently. May we never forget the sacrifice of the Silent Lamb that paid for our guilt and shame.

Prophecy Fulfilled: “And when He was accused of the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto Him, Hearest Thou not how many things they witness against Thee? And He answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly (Matthew 27:12-14).”

The Disciples Scattered

Prophecy Proclaimed: “Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, and against the Man that is My Fellow saith the Lord of hosts: smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn Mine hand upon the little ones (Zechariah 13:7).”

The heavens darkened at noonday, and the glowing face of the sun was veiled. When Jesus died upon the cross, He was suspended between heaven and earth.

His disciples had forsaken Him. Jesus knew and prophesied that His disciples would forsake Him and scatter in His hour of need: “Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad (Matthew 26:31).”

Because He had taken the sin of the world upon Himself, even God, His Father, in holy righteousness, could not look upon Him. I cannot understand it or explain it, but I know that God the Father forsook God the Son on the Cross.

The Bible says that God is of pure eyes and cannot behold inequity (Hababkkuk 1:3). God the Father turned His back on God the Son and Jesus cried, “… My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me (Matthew 27:46).” Jesus died alone.

Nobody ever really understood the heart of Jesus. Even when He was facing the cross, He could not make His disciples understand. He was like a sparrow on the rooftop alone. And alone He suffered.

Prophecy Proclaimed: “Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad… In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on Me. But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled (Matthew 26:31, 55-56).”
