Weekly Devotional 8-15-22 Right Conversations
With all that is happening in the world today, wars on every hand, an ever-changing political situation in many nations (Including our own), devastating tornados, floods, and other disasters, it is no wonder that most conversations, even in Christian circles, are focused on these things. But are these the things we should be talking about when we gather for worship, whether it be on Sunday morning, Sunday evening, midweek prayer meeting, or small group gatherings? The apostle Paul answers that question for us in his letter to the Colossians. He wrote: “1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3). This passage is of another context but from it we can justly conclude that we Christians are to be more concerned with things of our spiritual being rather than our temporal being.
All things of the natural realm will pass away, but the things of spiritual realm are eternal. When we gather on Sunday mornings for instance, shouldn’t our conversations be about what God has done since we were last together or what we perceive Him to be doing in the world of our day? Shouldn’t we consider all the things mentioned above as being temporary? Perhaps if we did, we would have a more worshipful attitude in our approach to Him, and perhaps this attitude would prevail in our conversations with family members, friends, co-workers, etc.
This does not mean that us Christians are to be so separated from the experiences of everyday life that our influence in temporal matters is diminished. Us Christians after all, are to be “the salt of the earth, the light of the world (Matthew 5:13-14). The point is, if we can develop a right conversational mindset in or worship settings, perhaps that mindset will carry over to how we converse with those who are not yet Christian, those who are still outside the kingdom of heaven.
