Weekly Devotional 2-11-13 How Do You Know?
“How do you know that Christianity is the only true religion? Is Christianity right and all other religions wrong?” These questions were asked of me a few weeks ago. I have been wondering how best to give an answer ever since. I have concluded that it is not possible to satisfactorily give an answer to such questions in order to convince the questioner that Christianity is right unless God should bring conviction to the inquisitor. So, it is not my attempt in this devotional to prove such a claim as much as it is to present the doctrine of Christianity.
Jesus, Christianity’s head, said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6 NKJV). One either believes what He said or one does not. If true, these words have consequences. Reject that path and you will not come unto God. Jesus also said, “He who believes in Him (in Jesus Himself) is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18 NKJV). Again, if what Jesus said is true the one who does not believe in Him is condemned. John the apostle declared, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).
In that such claims were made by Jesus who suffered the agonies of crucifixion, not recanting His claim either at His trial or as He hung on the cross, and by John who was tortured with burning oil and suffered exile rather than recant his faith in Jesus, all sincere questioners should give serious consideration to these claims. If the statements of both men are true (I believe they are) then according to those statements the person who commits to any other path of salvation (of being right with God) is lost. Do you want to risk that or do you have a desire to know, without a doubt, the truth? If you do, in sincerity ask God to make His truth known to you and He will.
I would leave you with these thoughts. Christianity is the only religion (so called) that declares that God moved on the behalf of man to restore him to a state of righteousness. All other forms of religion, by whatever name might be ascribed to it, is a philosophy of works.
Christianity declares, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John3:16).
