God’s Omniscience and Omnipotence Found in The Color of Skin
A few years ago a friend
asked if all humans descended from one set of parents why are there different
nationalities and colors of skin? The answer to the first part of his question
“why are their different nationalities?” is not difficult. We read from Genesis,
chapter eleven that because the descendants of Noah were of one language and
because they sought to build a society apart from the influence of God, God
scattered them across the face of the earth (Genesis 11:1-8). Mankind thus was
separated by language, locational differences, and developed ethnicities which
led to divisions, and groups of peoples, hence nationalities.
As to variations in skin color possibly it is do cellular manipulation. Seemingly within the genetic code of man God determined that some would be born with a higher level of Melanin. Melanin is a dark brown to black pigment produced by special cells called melanocytes. Seemingly the purpose of Melanin is to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. If this be the answer to why different skin color, we must recognize the sovereignty of God. In His omniscience (all knowing) He knew before He created the world that at a given point in time, He would scatter man across the face of the earth. Some, to areas of higher levels of heat requiring an adaptability to such phenomena. And by His omnipotence (being able to accomplish what He intended) He provided those He would scatter with that which would be needed for their protection, higher levels of Melanin. Before creation, God considered and made provision for every necessity of life, even the color of man’s skin. Oh, what a God!
Truly Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8)
